Riding school. 1793 on rainwaterhead; later alteration. For Sir Mark and Lady Henrietta Masterman Sykes. Finely tooled sandstone to front, dressed sandstone to sides and rear; timber eaves course; slate roof. Single-storey range of seven bays, the centre bay of one and a half storeys, on a plinth. Tall round-headed carriage arch with imposts to centre bay contains double doors beneath a lunette with glazing bars. Radial glazed oculus above. To end right is a C20 folding garage door. The remaining bays form recessed blind arcades containing small-pane lunettes with pivoting centre lights. Pyramidal roof with ball finial to centre bay. The rest of the roof is M-shaped, hipped to left.
Interior: a pair of Doric columns support a lantern over the centre bay. The magnificent double span roof is carried on pairs of moulded king post trusses supported on the backs of the principals of nine massive tie beams.
An unusual survival in a substantially unaltered state of an C18 Riding School, rare in this area, with a very fine roof.
