Description

The Riding School, built in 1793 for Sir Mark and Lady Henrietta Masterman Sykes, is located approximately 25 metres north-west of Settrington House. This single-storey building features finely tooled sandstone on the front and dressed sandstone on the sides and rear, with a timber eaves course and a slate roof. It consists of seven bays, with the central bay rising to one and a half storeys on a plinth.

A tall round-headed carriage arch with imposts in the centre bay contains double doors, topped by a lunette with glazing bars and a radial glazed oculus above. To the right, there is a 20th-century folding garage door. The other bays feature recessed blind arcades with small-pane lunettes that have pivoting centre lights. The central bay has a pyramidal roof with a ball finial, while the remaining roof is M-shaped and hipped to the left.

Inside, a pair of Doric columns supports a lantern over the centre bay. The impressive double span roof is held up by pairs of moulded king post trusses, which rest on the backs of the principals of nine massive tie beams. This riding school is a rare and largely unaltered example from the 18th century, showcasing a very fine roof.
