Description

Grey stone House is an early 18th-century house, with alterations and an extension dating to the 19th century. It is constructed of dressed limestone with limestone ashlar quoins and dressings, a timber eaves course, and a slate roof. The house follows a central-entrance plan, with a service wing to the left rear, and further rear extensions have been added. It is two storeys and has an attic, with a seven-window front. A chamfered plinth runs along the base. The central entrance has an 18-pane glazed door with a divided overlight, set within a plain doorcase and sheltered by a cantilevered porch. There are three tall 18-pane sashes to either side of the door. A later inserted 8-pane sash is positioned above the door within a raised architrave, accompanied by a similar replacement window to the right. The remaining first-floor windows are also 18-pane sashes. Stone sills are present on all ground and first-floor windows. Flat arches feature above all openings, except for the entrance door and the window above it. The eaves are accented by a paired modillion detail. Three dormers were added in the late 19th century to the attic. The gables are coped and feature shaped kneelers. Internal features include an open-well staircase to the rear, with an open-string staircase, turned balusters with square knops, and a moulded handrail. Six-panel doors with original door furniture are found in the front ground-floor rooms.
