Description

Dromonby House is a mid-18th century house that has undergone some alterations. It is built from finely-coursed herringbone-tooled and margined sandstone and features a graduated greenslate roof with stone ridge, copings, kneelers, and stacks. The house has a moulded and dentilled wood eaves cornice and is two storeys tall with five bays. The second bay contains a half-glazed door with a patterned overlight, which is sheltered by a later cornice hood supported by freestanding columns. The windows include 16-pane sashes on the ground floor, which have flat heads, and on the first floor, there are alternating round-arched windows with radial heads. All windows have keyed, pecked lintels that are carved to resemble voussoirs. The house features end and off-centre chimneys.

The rear elevation has four bays and a lower two-storey projecting east wing. There is a half-glazed door below a round-arched stair window, which has voussoirs and a keystone. Other windows on the rear include 16-pane sashes under extended, keyed lintels, while the wing has three-light casements under keyed lintels, except for a round-headed window on the first floor left that is similar to the stair window. The main house also has a subsidiary door and three small inserted windows on the left side. A bell is mounted on a bracket under the eaves on the left.

Inside, the house features wide six-panel doors and a dado rail in the hall with plaster panelling. The cut-string staircase has three slender turned balusters per tread, shaped tread ends, a wreathed handrail, and a curtail step. An added sunroom on the east side is noted but is not of special interest.
