Description

Bouthwaite Grange and Grange Cottage is a house built in 1673, with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed squared stone and ashlar, topped with a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and features scattered fenestration across five bays.

The central entrance consists of a board door set in a chamfered stone surround, topped with a basket-arched lintel inscribed "RI 1673". To the right of this door is another board door in a chamfered stone surround with a 4-centred arched head. To the left, there is a double-chamfered 4-light mullioned window with a hoodmould. To the right of the central door is a chamfered single-light window, followed by a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window with a hoodmould. On the left side of the central door, there are a 2-light and a one-light chamfered mullioned window. Above, there are two similar windows, and a single window over the central door, along with a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window with 17th and 18th century leaded glazing to the right, and a 19th century four-light double-chamfered mullion window further to the right. The building has end stacks.

The garden front also features five bays, with a central board door in a chamfered surround, flanked by one single-light and two 2-light double-chamfered windows on either side. Above the door is a raised stone plaque, with similar windows arranged as below.

Inside, there is a notable 17th century oak staircase, oak doors with early ironwork, 17th century panelling, and stone fireplaces. This building was originally a grange of Fountains Abbey.
