Description
Prospect Crescent comprises numbers 1 to 10, built between 1873 and 1880 by George Dawson to a design by J.H. Hirst. The crescent is symmetrical, with slightly projecting end pavilions at numbers 1, 9, and 10, and a central pavilion at number 5. The building extends over three storeys, with cellars and attics. It has a slated roof with tall, hipped roofs of a French style, featuring ornamental iron cresting on the pavilions. The exterior is constructed of grit stone ashlar. Corinthian pilasters rise through the first and second floors, supporting an entablature. The attic storey incorporates blind balustrades between a pedimented window bay and is surmounted by urns. The fenestration pattern is 3:9:3:9:3. The windows are round-arched sash windows with archivolts, keys, and impost bands; splayed bay windows are present at the first floor of the pavilions and to the central window of each three-bay unit. Modern shopfronts and entrances are located on the ground floor. Numbers 1 to 10 form a group.
