Description
Bondgate House dates from the late 17th century, though it was substantially altered in the mid-19th century. The east wing, which has only two timber posts remaining, may be even earlier. The current street facade may represent a rebuilding of the western bay of this earlier wing. This would explain the presence of a large fireplace shared between the main house and the wing, which would have been centrally located if the wing had extended further west.
The late 17th-century section is constructed of roughcast brick with a limestone plinth. It features a pantiled slate roof with deep, boxed eaves, and ornamental bargeboards on the gables. The rear wing has a hipped stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. It incorporates 19th-century casement windows, alongside 18th-century flush-framed sash windows with glazing bars in moulded cases. The front door is within a Tuscan wooden frame with panelled pilasters.
The south elevation contains a single three-light stone mullioned window with chamfered mullions and a moulded brick cornice. A fragment of a similar moulded brick cornice remains below this window, near the door. The north elevation features two mullioned windows and an opening into the gable.
The staircase is located in the angle between the late 17th-century section and the rest of the building and is contemporary with that part, further suggesting the earlier date of the wing. Externally, the staircase previously had one mullioned window and one round window, both now internal. The staircase includes moulded newels with finials, turned balusters, and a lower rail in place of a closed string.
