Description

These are a pair of gate piers marking the entrance to the Canal Saw Mills, situated on the corner of Bondgate Green Lane in Ripon. Built in 1829, as indicated by a date stone, the piers are constructed from vermiculated and rusticated sandstone ashlar. They feature coved cornices and pyramidal caps, with one cap surmounted by a ball finial. Historically, the piers served as the entrance to a canal wharf developed by the Aire and Calder Navigation Company on the Ripon Canal.
