Description

Grange Farmhouse and Fairfax Cottage are a house and cottage built in 1604 and 1728. They are constructed of coursed squared gritstone with a graduated stone slate roof. The building comprises a two-storey, two-bay house to the left and a lower, two-storey, two-bay cottage to the right. Quoins are present.

The Grange farmhouse (left) has a slightly off-centre half-glazed four-panel door set within an eared architrave with a cornice and a keystone inscribed "M 1728" and "I M". To the left of the door is a two-light recessed chamfered window with a flat-faced mullion; a larger, similar recessed window with a hoodmould is to the right. The first floor has two four-light recessed chamfered mullion windows – the left window retaining flat-faced mullions, while the right has chamfered mullions. Shaped kneelers and gable copings are present, with end stacks, the one to the left being rendered and the one to the right being corniced. A base for a large external stack is visible on the left return.

Fairfax Cottage (right) features a half-glazed door in a wide doorway with a double cavetto moulding and a hoodmould with a plaque inscribed "IM 1604". The hoodmould continues over a former four-light recessed chamfered mullion window to the right, where the mullions have been removed. A recessed chamfered window with two round-headed lights and a retooled lintel is at first floor level to the left, and a former three-light recessed chamfered window is to the right. Shaped kneelers and a gable coping are present, as well as a corniced ridge stack to the right. The interior was not inspected during a resurvey.
