Description
The Old School, now a house, along with its railings, gate, and gate-piers, was built in 1817. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar featuring herring-bone tooling and has a stone slate roof. The building is a single storey with three bays. It has a projecting central porch that includes a pointed-arched opening with a studded board door, flanked by blind pointed-arched single-lights, and topped with crested parapets. The school room features broad pointed-arched windows with intersecting Y-tracery on either side of the porch. The building has ashlar copings and an end stack on the right. To the left, there is a range that has been raised from one storey to two storeys, which is not of special interest. In front of the school, there is a low ashlar plinth with a saddleback section coping on top, supporting simple railings with urn finials on the standards. The monolithic sandstone gate-piers flank the gate, which has simple bars and decorative scrollwork in the lower half. According to Bulmer's "History, Topography and Directory of North Yorkshire" from 1890, the church school was erected by the Earl of Ailesbury in 1817.
