Description
The Blue Lion is an inn dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar sandstone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and a three-bay main range, with a one-bay subsidiary range to the right. The main range has quoins and a central six-panel door with an overlight that has decorative glazing bars, all set in a moulded stone surround. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, include those on the first floor that are made up of nine unequally hung panes, all with ashlar sills and lintels. Between the second and third bays on the first floor, there are two small stone corbels that support an old painted wooden inn sign. The building also features shaped kneelers, ashlar copings, and ashlar end stacks. The subsidiary range is set back and has quoins on the right side. In the left corner, there is a part-glazed six-panel door, along with ashlar sills and a lintel. The ground floor includes a 16-pane sash window, and on the first floor, there is an unequally-hung 12-pane sash window. The right side has a shaped kneeler, ashlar coping, and an ashlar end stack. The name "The Blue Lion" is derived from the armorial device of the Bruce family, who were associated with the Earl of Ailesbury.
