Description
This is a house located at No. 1 East Witton, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations and additions made in the early 19th century. The building is roughcast with stone slate and pantile roofs and has two storeys. It consists of three sections, with the oldest part in the center, flanked by taller extensions on either side.
The central section features two first-floor windows and a ground floor with a central 6-panel door from the 20th century, along with three 6-pane sash windows. One of the windows on the extreme left was probably originally a fire window, while the one to the right of the door has the head of a 2-light mullioned window. The first floor has 6-pane sashes set in stone surrounds of 2-light chamfered mullioned windows, topped by a stone slate roof.
The left section has one bay, with a ground floor 16-pane sash window that has an ashlar sill and lintel, and a first-floor 4-pane sash window with an ashlar sill. It features shaped kneelers, ashlar copings, a steeper-sloping pantile roof, and end stacks.
The right section has a projecting canted bay window with sash windows that have glazing bars, along with copings and a steeper-sloping pantile roof, and a left end stack. Inside, there is a 17th-century fireplace with a bolection surround in the room to the left of the door. This building is significant as it is the only one that notably predates the relocation of the old village at Low Thorpe to its current planned layout by the Earl of Ailesbury in the early 19th century.
