Description

The Statue Walk at Newby Park features six statues and five sets of steps with flanking balustrades. The statues are believed to be from the 17th century, although they may be later. The walk was established around 1870 for Lady Mary Vyner, likely designed by William Burges. It is constructed with gritstone balustrades and steps, along with limestone statues and plinths. The straight pathway is approximately 150 meters long, sloping down from east to west, which requires one flight of four steps at the eastern end and two flights of three steps at the western end. The pathway also marks the edge of a terrace, with steps leading down at the center and the eastern end. Each flight of steps is bordered by balustrades featuring bulbous balusters, interrupted by square piers topped with urns or ball finials. The six statues are located on the south side of the walk, facing the house, and are likely arranged in two groups: one depicting the four seasons and the other possibly representing Flora and Bacchus. The Statue Walk was part of the south garden scheme developed in the late 19th century and extended to the south in the mid-20th century.
