Description

These six flights of garden steps with statues were built around 1867, likely designed by J.A. Hansom as part of the garden layout. The steps are stone and feature cast cement statues. They are located to the east and south of Lartington Hall. The statues, approximately 1 meter high, are dressed in historical costume and represent genre scenes, possibly drawn from literature or theatre. They are described sequentially, moving anti-clockwise around the garden.

Flight 1, located 2 meters south of the central gate piers of the north garden wall, includes a lady with a cross and dagger, a lady in medieval dress, a man in medieval costume, and a lady in Greek dress holding a bouquet.

Flight 2, 40 meters south of Flight 1, features a lady in Egyptian headdress, a painter in medieval costume, a lady in classical dress, a pedlar in medieval costume, and a lady with an umbrella and a dog.

Flight 3, situated 60 meters south-west of Flight 2, depicts a drunken fish porter and a man in classical attire with an urn and spear.

Flight 4, 35 meters east of Flight 3, portrays a bewhiskered man, and a lady representing 'Flora'.

Flight 5, 30 meters east of Flight 4, shows a young lady in a ball gown with a tiara and fan.

Flight 6 is a double flight, located 60 meters north of Flight 5, and displays a Red Indian (Queequeg), a Knight in armour, an ugly old man, a doleful 'medieval' sculptor with a mallet and unfinished sculpture, and a 'classical' lady with a book.

Six other statues have been removed, but the steps and remaining statues are included on the heritage register due to their group value.
