Description

The Thatch and Smithy Cottage, originally shown on Ordnance Survey maps as the Post Office, is an early 18th-century house with an attached cottage. The house was altered in the late 19th century, while the cottage itself dates to the 19th century. The house is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with a graduated green slate roof and stone chimney stacks. The cottage has a stone-flagged roof and a brick chimney stack.

The house comprises the three left bays and the attached cottage occupies the right bay of the original house and the cottage to the right. The house has two storeys and four bays, with alternating quoins. A partly-glazed four-panel door is set in a flush surround in the second bay, and a similar door is located at the junction to the right. The windows, altered in the late 19th century, now contain four-pane sashes. A first-floor window between bays three and four has been blocked. The eaves are raised and the roof is steeply-pitched with slightly-swept eaves. The end and ridge stacks have been rebuilt and feature top bands.

The attached, lower, two-storey, one-bay cottage has replaced four-pane sashes, a low-pitched roof, and a right-end stack.

Two linked outshuts at the rear of the house incorporate replaced windows and low-pitched pent roofs.
