Description

The garden ornaments around the East Lawn, located to the east of Mount Edgcumbe House, date from the mid-19th century and include four statues, a balustrade, piers, a sundial, urns, and steps. The balustrade encloses the East Lawn, forming a north/south range and an east/west range. The statues are positioned at the east end of the lawn. A path runs along the central east/west axis of the lawn, featuring a sundial at the center, surrounded by four urns arranged in a square. At the west end of the path, there are four additional urns.

The statues include a depiction of Minerva, wearing a helmet and holding a serpent and staff, on a square pedestal; a painted statue of Diana, with a quiver of arrows and a stag, on a rendered square pedestal; a painted statue of Mercury, holding pan pipes, on a square pedestal with a moulded base and top; and a draped seated figure, with a sheathed sword and an infant at its feet, on a stone pedestal with a rounded front and cornice. All statues are cast in a Roman style.

The balustrade extends approximately 50 meters in the north/south range and about 40 meters in the east/west range. It features column balusters with plain dies on a plain plinth and a moulded top rail. In the east/west range, at the southeast corner, there is a pedestal topped with a pineapple finial. The balustrade bows out off-centre to the northeast, with pedestals on either side of the bow, each topped with limestone urns adorned with swags of flowers. There are three steps leading down from the East Lawn. The north/south range includes a pair of plain square pedestals with similar urns on each side of a flight of seven steps, flanked by short walls with small urns on either side. At the northwest end of this range, there is a terminal pier with a similar urn featuring swags.

The sundial is made of fluted limestone and has a bronze plate with a gnomon, created by Lancaster of Devonport. Four urns on plain pedestals surround the sundial, with four additional urns located at the west end of the path.
