Description
This group of garden ornaments, located in Fern Dell at Edgcumbe Country Park, dates from the mid-19th century and incorporates some older pieces. The collection includes a pedestal with a cornice and moulded plinth, two elliptical stone benches with shaped ends, and a round arched sandstone fountain featuring a granite keystone, a grotesque mask, and a granite base. Additionally, there is a Roman-style acanthus leaf capital, a moulded plinth with a pedimented cap, and a pair of Roman funerary urns adorned with scrolled pediment caps and a Latin inscription. This unique assortment of mainly neo-classical ornaments is arranged within a romantic Victorian fernery, which serves as a pets' cemetery. Notably, this site was the original burial place of Cupid, the pet pig of Emma, Countess of Mount Edgcumbe.
