Description
The Garden Battery is an artillery battery built in 1863 for coastal defense, later adapted as a saluting platform and a garden feature. It is made of granite and has a crescent-shaped structure with coursed rockface granite, featuring a plinth, cornice, and terminal piers. The battery includes seven gun ports with voussoir heads that are now blocked. Above, there is a saluting terrace with a balustrade and a French Republican cannon. Five steps lead down from the terrace to the garden. At the south end of the terrace, there is a small square structure of unknown purpose, topped with a dome supported by four piers. This battery was part of the defenses of Plymouth, which were improved by Lord Palmerston in the mid-19th century, and it cost £7,804 to build.
