Description
Swallow House is a house located in Stillingfleet, likely dating from the late 16th century, with later additions and alterations, including late 20th-century extensions on both sides that are of no particular interest. The building features a timber frame with a pinkish-brown brick ground floor and cladding at the rear, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It is probably an originally end aisled hall house. The house has two storeys and two bays of frame, with the entrance located at the rear.
On the ground floor, there are wall posts, a middle rail, studding with tension braces, and casement windows. An end stack is present. The interior reveals timber framing, including wall posts at the front and rear, and a stud partition between rooms with a cross beam. There is a bressumer beam above the living room fireplace, a chamfered beam with tongue stops in the living room, and exposed joists. The kitchen has a replacement beam and exposed joists.
On the first floor, remnants of a tie beam and main posts can be seen in the front and rear walls, along with exposed studding and tension braces, and a wall plate at the front and rear walls.
