Description
The Pound is a village pound or pinfold, likely from the 18th century, though it may be older. It is a square enclosure measuring approximately 7 meters by 7 meters, featuring a single narrow entrance located at the eastern end of the south wall.
The structure is built with randomly bonded brick walls, which have dressed stone coping along part of their length. Stability is enhanced by simple brick buttresses placed at intervals and by thickening the walls at the corners. The interior of the pound is stone flagged.
This pound is designated as Grade II due to its well-preserved condition as an intact structure dating before 1840. It serves as a notable example of a village pound or pinfold, which were once common but are now increasingly rare across the country. Additionally, it holds historical significance as a remnant of medieval village management, specifically for addressing the issue of stray livestock.
