Description
Cloughton War Memorial is a First World War memorial designed in the form of an obelisk, with an additional inscription commemorating the Second World War.
Constructed from sandstone, the memorial features white infilled inscriptions. The traditional obelisk stands on a square plinth, which is raised on a three-stepped base. The north face of the obelisk is adorned with a laurel wreath carved in relief. The north face of the plinth bears the inscription: "ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS/ OF CLOUGHTON IN GRATEFUL/ RECOGNITION OF OUR BRAVE LADS/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919/ LEST WE FORGET/ ALSO THOSE IN THE SECOND/ WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945," followed by three names listed by surname, including ranks and honours. On the sides of the plinth, there are 14 additional names, also ordered by surname and including ranks, with one name placed out of alphabetical order at the end in matching script.
