Description

These four lamp posts are located within Promenade Square and date from 1848. They are cast iron and feature a square base with embossed decoration. Each face of the base displays a Yorkshire rose above a palmette design. The posts rise to a tapering, reeded column, topped with a palmette-decorated bell capital. A pair of small lion heads are flanked by ornately shaped ladder rests above the capital. Each post supports a modern reproduction of a ‘Windsor’ style lantern, with the exception of the easternmost post, which has a swan neck fitting installed. Under the terms of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, the swan neck fitting is not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest. The lamp posts have a strong visual connection with the Grade II-listed town houses forming the northern side of the square, and are viewed from the Grade II-registered Valley Gardens and from the Grade II*-listed Royal Pump Room.
