Description
A pair of houses dating from the late 18th century, numbers 25 and 27 Castlegate, are constructed of painted stone with a stone string course marking the ground floor level and a dentil brick frieze along the top edge. They have a pantile roof. The houses have two full storeys and a lower ground floor. The front elevation features three large four-pane sash windows on the first floor and two similar windows on the ground floor, which flank a central elliptical arched recess. This recess provides access to two six-fielded panel doors, approached by nine stone steps. A two-light sliding casement window is located on the lower ground floor to the left, and a four-panelled door is adjacent to the steps. To the right, there is a three-light sash window and a similar door. The central window on the first floor and the ground floor doors are flanked by original cast lead rainwater heads and drum pipes. Numbers 25 to 35 (odd) collectively contribute to group value.
