Description

The Elms is a house dating from the early 18th century, likely with earlier origins, and altered and extended in the late 19th century in two phases. It is constructed of squared sandstone on a plinth, with red brick extensions in a Flemish bond pattern, and has a pantile roof with brick and rendered stacks. The building follows a central stair-hall plan with extensions to the rear.

The front of the house has two storeys and three windows. A central door, with 19th-century coloured glazing within a bordered frame, is sheltered by a porch with an entablature supported by fluted Doric columns. Tripartite sash windows are located to the left and right, and single-pane sashes are present on the first floor. All windows have painted wedge lintels and stone sills. The gables are coped and feature shaped kneelers. There are stacks located to the left of centre and at the right end of the building.

Inside, a staircase from the early to mid-18th century occupies the centre room, with a moulded handrail on turned balusters and shaped cheek-pieces. To the left of this room is a segment-arched fireplace. Panelled shutters with original fittings are found at all ground-floor front openings. In the attic, a reused crossed-apex cruck truss spans the left cross wall, and there is a door with H-L hinges. The house served as the manor house of Norton until the late 19th century.
