Description
This is a late 19th-century police station and police house, later adapted into a council office and ancillary offices for the Magistrates’ Court. Domestic accommodation was originally provided on the first floor. The building is constructed of variegated brick in an English garden wall bond, with yellow and red brick dressings, and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high with an attic, and has a two-window front. A Doric portico with a four-panel door is located on the right, with steps leading up to it. A two-storey canted bay to the left also has a four-panel door and steps. The canted bay has four-pane sashes on both floors, topped by a plain parapet with a band of cogged brick. A single-pane sash sits above the door, with a small, four-pane sash in the attic. Stone sills are present on all windows. A single raised brick course runs along the eaves. The roof is hipped, with a central ridge stack. The left return front features double doors with bordered colored glazing in the top half, set within a doorcase of Doric pilasters and an entablature. Small four-pane sashes with stone sills and cambered arches are on either side of the doors. A four-pane sash is located on the first floor. Iron railings with turned standards and balusters ramp up to the front steps.
