Description

Gascoigne's Jewellers is a town house and shop built around 1800, with an addition from around 1860. The building is constructed of brick and rubble stone, featuring brick dressings. It has a pantile roof with dentilated brick eaves and two gable stacks, and stands three storeys tall. The street front includes a single-storey flat-roofed shop extension that has a wooden pilastered shop window topped with an entablature fascia board. To the left of the shop window is a doorway with a five-panel door and overlight, while to the right, the shop window has four sets of shutters. The shop is topped with a coped brick parapet. There is a passage doorway set back to the left, which has a six-panel door. The passageway includes a blocked window to the right and a doorway beyond with a four-panel door. The rear wall is made of rubble stone with brick quoins and features a single-storey rendered addition. Above, there is a single sliding sash window with glazing bars to the right and blocked windows to the left.

Inside, the shop contains a spine beam, wooden partition, and display cases. The rear room features a simple marble fireplace with an iron range and fitted cupboards to the right. An original wooden staircase leads to two upper rooms, each with original fireplaces. The attic retains its original timber roof.
