Description
The entrance gates and gate piers located approximately 180 metres west of Scampston Hall date from the early 19th century. The gate piers are made of rusticated sandstone and sandstone ashlar, featuring alternating bands of vermiculate and smooth stone. Each pier has shallow pilasters that support scrolled volutes on either side. They also include moulded cornices and ball-and-pedestal finials, with the balls surrounded by square rusticated bands. The gates are paired, with the right gate designed for pedestrians and ramped up to the piers. The gates have open spear-headed standards and a half rail of diagonal lattice work.
