Description
The gates, gate piers, flanking walls, and railings located approximately one metre south of The Lodge to Scampston Hall date from the early 19th century. They feature timber and cast-iron gates, sandstone ashlar gate piers, tooled sandstone walls, and cast-iron railings. The structure includes double carriage gates with flanking piers and footgates on each side, surrounded by curving walls topped with railings and terminal piers. The carriage gates and footgates are designed in a Chinese Chippendale pattern, ramped up with open halberd tips. There are three square-section gate piers, each with raised panels on two sides and sunk panels on the other two, topped with double cornices and shallow pyramidal caps. A broken fourth pier is situated behind the gates. The low flanking walls have chamfered coping that supports the railings. The terminal piers echo the design of the gate piers but feature a single cornice. This gateway originally served as the main entrance to Scampston Hall.
