Description

The Coach and Horses is a public house located on Scarborough Road in Rillington. It dates from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century and a 20th-century extension. The building is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, featuring orange rubbed brick dressings and a painted chamfered plinth. Part of the structure has mock timber framing, and it has a pantile roof.

The plan is L-shaped, with the 20th-century extension on the right side. The front facing Scarborough Road is two stories high with three windows, and there is a single-storey range to the right. The central entrance consists of a half-glazed door beneath a radial-glazed fanlight, set within a glazed screen. The door-case is tripartite, featuring fluted pilasters, an entablature, and a central open pediment. The windows are 4-pane sashes with 20th-century louvred shutters and painted stone sills, all set within keyed raised surrounds. Traces of earlier flat arches can be seen above the later surrounds. There is an end stack on the right side, while the 20th-century extension is not of special interest.

The eaves on both fronts are stepped and dentilled. At the rear, which faces Low Moorgate, there is a two-storey, two-window front, with the gable end of the front range on the right. To the right of the 4-pane sash window is a 4-panel door with an overlight, and there are similar windows above the door and to the left on the first floor. The gable end on the right features a 4-pane sash on the ground floor and mock timber framing on the first floor, which contains a 4-light oriel window. All windows, except for the oriel, have painted stone sills and keyed flat arches. There are stacks at both ends, left and right of center.
