Description
The gravestone of Thomas Lonsdale, dating from 1781, is located approximately 5 metres east of the south porch of the Church of St Michael in Sawley. This gravestone is made of gritstone and is a single block that stands about 1 metre high and 80 centimetres wide, featuring a scrolled top. The inscription is well-cut and reads: 'Thomas Lonsdale of Sawley departed / this Life August the 1(8)th 1781 aged 70: / He And (his dog) ranged Wood and Dale / H ( ) grew weak and strength did fail / He liked his Dog his Gun his Cup / But now at last has giv'n them up. / His Dog and Gun He's now laid by / And (near?) this Place inter'd doth lie'.
