Description
This is a headstone dated 1844, located approximately 3 metres south of the porch of the Church of St Michael in Spreyton. It commemorates Thomas Cobley and is made of limestone. The upright slab stands about 1.2 metres high and features a shaped head. The inscription includes Gothic lettering for the first word, with the remainder in plain capitals and some italics. It records the deaths of Thomas Cobley, gentleman, in 1844, his wife Elizabeth in 1839, and his nephew William in 1837. Thomas Cobley is known as "Uncle Tom Cobley" from the famous folk song "Widecombe Fair."
