Description
The Bardsea Monument, located in the grounds of Ulverston Golf Club, was built in 1792 for W. Braddyll. It is constructed from limestone rubble, with some ashlar and brick elements. The monument features a triangular plan structure set on a round base, supported by diagonal buttresses. It has a corbelled parapet with flat coping and finials, topped by a cupola with a lantern. Each face of the monument includes a 4-centred relieving arch made of ashlar and brick, with a round-headed niche that contains an urn; the niche on the north-west face is missing. The base of the monument is inscribed with "POSUIT WB". The urns on the other sides commemorate Christopher Wilson and Sarah, John and Jane Gale, who were relatives of William Braddyll, with the urn on the north-east side also noting the erection of the monument. This structure serves as a prominent landmark on the Furness peninsula.
