Description

Bulmer's Monument, located in the garden of Town Head, is a monument dated 1727 on its east face. It is made of hard gritstone and features a primitive style of carving. The monument has a large square plinth with a plain stepped base and a square stepped shaft. Each face of the step displays a relief carving of a lifeboat. The top is stepped and has a socket where a finial is missing.

The main shaft is adorned with round angle pilasters that support keyed segmental arches. The panels within and beneath these arches are inscribed in archaic spelling.

On the east face, the inscription reads: "1727 in this year it was true intent to make a lasting monument to show thy mercies ever-where abound and saves where no mankind are to be found of this having had large expieryance. This ship y Providence."

The south face states: "Thy saile on sea short it must be. We must be stript of all and then return to dust. And this the Charity."

The north face notes: "To many forein shores then Germany Holland France and Spain. Wreckd at lenth his frail bark. Y Faithfull."

The west face reads: "The hopefull anchors cast is now unriggd and here ly-eth moo-rd fast. Rememb-er man. Y Hopefull."

Around the frieze, it mentions: "Thos. Bulmer who lived here has often crossed the main."

The base has an inscription that begins: "Tossed on Rough Seas on broken pieces of the ship until ...." but the rest is obscured by lichens.
