Description
The Bardwell Monument, located approximately 15 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Edmund, is a Grade II listed structure commemorating William Bardwell, an architect who died in 1853, along with other family members. It is possibly designed by Bardwell himself. The monument is constructed of brick and clad in various materials.
It features a rectangular sarcophagus raised on a square plinth, which is inset with headstones of the Bardwell family, marble panels, and various domestic architectural mouldings. Red ceramic tiles display the names and dates of those commemorated in a single band around the monument. The plinth has a corbelled capping with ballflower decoration. The sarcophagus is adorned with domestic architectural mouldings and includes square corner columns made of marble, which are topped with Composite capitals and finished with crocketed and cross-gabled finials.
