SD27SW ABBEY APPROACH 708-1/4/5 Capella Extra Portas with attached 06/05/76 walls

Ruined chapel. c1300. Red ashlar sandstone, no roof. Single vessel, 5x1 bays. Plinth. Moulded string course, at impost of round-arched south door, continues to right across buttresses between former 3-light windows with pointed cusped arches, geometrical tracery removed. Bay 4 occupied by broad gabled projection (rear of sedilia). To left of south door the string course rises over the scar of a wing wall of which only the foundations remain. West door has keeled round arch with carved hood stops; niche and string course over. Buttresses flank ruined east window. INTERIOR: triple sedilia with one trefoil shaft remaining, the arched recesses beneath hooded panel with gablets and torch finials; piscina and credence to left. Statue base to left of east window. Situated outside the abbey precinct and used by dependents of the monastery and others who did not normally worship in the abbey church (qv). Adjoining archways listed separately (qv).
