Description
Capella Extra Portas is a ruined chapel dating from around 1300, constructed from red ashlar sandstone and lacking a roof. The chapel consists of a single vessel with five by one bays. It features a plinth and a moulded string course that runs along the impost of the round-arched south door, continuing across the buttresses between the former three-light windows, which originally had pointed cusped arches but now have the geometrical tracery removed. The fourth bay is occupied by a broad gabled projection at the rear of the sedilia. To the left of the south door, the string course rises over the scar of a wing wall, of which only the foundations remain. The west door has a keeled round arch with carved hood stops, along with a niche and string course above it. Buttresses flank the ruined east window.
Inside, there are triple sedilia with one remaining trefoil shaft, and the arched recesses are beneath a hooded panel with gablets and torch finials. To the left, there is a piscina and credence, as well as a statue base next to the east window. The chapel is located outside the abbey precinct and was used by dependents of the monastery and others who did not typically worship in the abbey church. Adjoining archways are listed separately.
