Description

Capel Seion is an imposing chapel, built in the 18th century and incorporating a custodian's accommodation. It is constructed of dark snecked rubble with pale limestone dressings, with ashlar facing to the ground floor front and the first bay of the returns. The roof is slate, and all elevations feature a cornice and parapet, with corner pilasters to projecting bays.

The front facade is broad, with five bays and a parapet adorned with urns and intricate swagged and pinnacled ball-finials, complemented by a prominent heavy cornice. The central three bays form a temple front, topped with a pediment above three round-headed windows articulated by Doric columns, paired at the ends. A balcony with bulbous balusters is present. Below, an open ground floor loggia features three round-headed arches, constructed of ashlar with vermiculated banding. Inside the loggia are ceramic tiled walls, with panelled entrance doors to the sides. The outer bays of the front each have a first-floor window with a bracketed cornice and apron, and a round-headed entrance door with overlight and panelled double doors.

The north elevation is characterised by a cornice, parapet urns, and a recessed central block of five bays. A string course runs at impost and sill level, and the first floor contains five round-headed windows—one is narrower than the others—with keystones. The ground floor has four camber-headed windows with keystones, and to the left, a camber-headed doorway with double panelled doors and an overlight. A projecting bay with corner pilasters is situated to the right, featuring a first-floor square-headed window with a bracketed cornice to the freestone architrave and a ground-floor round-headed window with a keystone and string course at impost level. To the left, another projecting bay with corner pilasters has two square-headed windows to the first floor, separated by a band course; on the ground floor, two square-headed windows with segmental lintels are flanked by a doorway with a bracketed cornice and a four-panelled door with overlight.

The south side is similar to the north but lacks doorways. A fire escape is visible to the right. At the rear, a central projecting gabled bay features corner pilasters, two square-headed first-floor windows, and two ground-floor windows with cambered lintels. The outer bays each have a first-floor square-headed window and a band course between the storeys, with a small, square, flat-roofed extension added later to the ground floor on the left.

The grand interior features a boarded and panelled ceiling, supported by a continuous gallery on Italianate Corinthian cast-iron columns. The gallery’s parapet is wooden, with pierced scrolled panels. Behind the set fawr enclosure, an upper wall is punctuated by three arches—the central camber-headed arch houses a grand organ installed around 1914, while the flanking round-headed arches feature fretted tympana and panelling below. The set fawr enclosure incorporates a panelled partition. A polygonal pulpit, with turned newels and balusters to the stairs, is also present. Additional features include pitch pine seats and dado panelling. Behind the main chapel space is a vestry with caretaker accommodation below.
