Description

Holme Park School is a large house, dating from the 18th century with substantial remodelling in the early 19th century (approximately 1809). It appears on the 1770 Westmorland map, and was later altered. The building is constructed of wet-dashed rubble, with graduated slate roofs. Originally, the house was symmetrical with nine bays. A central, full-height, flat-roofed, canted porch has a panelled double door in an architrave and a fanlight above the door displaying the name "SEWARD" in stained glass, commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars set in architraves. The building features moulded cast iron guttering and stone chimneys. A courtyard range adjoins the west end of the house, and a former single-storey billiard room is linked to the east end. The interior has decorative plasterwork, and contains a curved staircase with cast iron splats. A range of buildings to the east of the billiard room are not considered part of the original composition.
