Description
The gatepiers at the north entrance of St Stephen's churchyard are likely from the late 18th century or early 19th century and may have been re-used from Raw Head farm, the home of the Sleddall family. Each gatepier is made of rusticated stone, featuring a battered plinth and cornice, and is square in plan, standing approximately 9 feet high. Atop each pier is a life-size cast iron running greyhound, which is supported by the letter "S," representing the Sleddall family badge. Between the gatepiers is a wrought-iron double gate that dates to around 1911. Identical gatepiers can be found on School Lane, to the west of the former school.
