Description
The Church of St Stephen is a parish church built between 1828 and 1829 by George Webster. It features pebble-dashed rubble on a battered plinth, with hammer-dressed stone details. The roofs are covered with graduated slate and have stone copings and kneelers. The structure includes a three-stage western tower that is partly integrated into a five-bay nave, along with a single-bay chancel. A string course runs above the plinth. The entrance consists of a panelled double door in a splayed surround with a pointed head, flanked by windows on either side, and a window and louvred belfry opening above. The tower is topped with stepped crenellation at the parapet. The nave has five windows, and the chancel features a paired east window. All windows have splayed surrounds with pointed heads, and except for the east windows, they contain square-leaded panes. The church also has moulded cast iron guttering.
Inside, the church retains original numbered pews and a western gallery supported by a wooden arcade of four-centred arches and clustered columns. There is a polygonal wooden pulpit on the north side, next to the organ, and a small marble bowl font located at the west end on the south side. Two memorials were created by Webster, with one by Airey. The north wall displays the Fisher coat-of-arms, while the south wall features the Royal coat-of-arms of King George III. The east windows contain very good stained glass from around 1902, created by H. Gustave Miller, in memory of Queen Victoria.
