Description
High Biggins Old Hall is a building that dates from the 15th century, with additions from the early 17th century and the 19th century. It is two storeys high and constructed of rubble with a steeply pitched slate roof over the east wing. The structure is now L-shaped, featuring a Medieval solar and two later wings, one of which occupies the site of the original hall.
The Medieval section has two windows on the west side: one on the first floor from the 15th century, which has two chamfered lights with hooks for shutters in the splay, and one on the ground floor from the late 16th or early 17th century, featuring three chamfered lights with the centre light rebated. There is also a blocked two-centred arched doorway on the ground floor and heavy beams in the ceiling. The first floor includes a chamfered fireplace with a shouldered lintel.
The early 17th-century wing on the north side has several three and four-light chamfered mullion windows with labels and decorated label stops, and a crocketed finial survives at the north-east corner. On the south side of this block, there is a doorway at first floor level with a single roll on the arris. Inside, the first floor features a square-headed fireplace with a stopped double chamfer. Although the north wing is likely from the 19th century, it has a doorway with a label above it, inscribed with the raised lettering "EC 1606" for Edward Curwen.
The roofs throughout the building are from the 19th century. A block that once linked High Biggins Old Hall to Biggins Hall, which contained fragments of older work, has been demolished recently. The hall was built and extended as a manor house, and the upper part of the east wing may have served as a courtroom.
