Description
South Lodge and the adjoining gateway, located east of Greystoke Castle, were built in 1846 and are attributed to Henry Howard. The structure features dressed mixed pink and grey sandstone walls and is topped with a graduated greenslate roof, which has raised coped gables and ashlar ridge chimney stacks. It is a single-storey building with two bays, including a right gate archway that is positioned at right angles to the main structure. The archway has a segmental arch that displays the Howard coat-of-arms and is topped with a stepped battlemented parapet. There is a smaller pedestrian doorway on the left side. The lodge has a central plank door with a Tudor-arched surround and is flanked by two-light stone-mullioned windows. The left return wall, which is continuous with the archway, features an angled bay window.
