Description

Green Farmhouse, an adjoining cottage, and a barn/byre range are located on Main Street in Shap. The farmhouse and cottage, which is now part of the house, date back to 1703, a date that is no longer visible but was recorded above the house door along with the initials A.W. and W.W., representing the Winfell family. The farmhouse features incised stucco, while the barn/byre is constructed from coursed squared rubble with quoins. The roof of the house is covered in graduated slate and includes skylights, with stone coping at the north end. The barn/byre has a hipped roof made of corrugated asbestos. Both structures are two storeys tall.

The farmhouse was originally symmetrical with five bays. It has a central panelled door beneath a bracketed hood, flanked by two sash windows on either side and five more above. There are stone chimneys at each end. The former cottage, which is now incorporated into the house, likely had a door on the right side of the ground floor, which is now blocked and rendered over, with a sash window to the left and above. There is also a trompe l'oeil window on the first floor to the left, and all sash windows have glazing bars within stone surrounds.

The barn/byre consists of nine bays and features two byre doors and a wagon door, all made of planks, with windows in between. There are vent slits to the right and above. In front of the house, there is an area wall made of coursed squared rubble, approximately three feet high, with segmental coping. The gate piers are made of ashlar and topped with pyramidal caps.
