Description

28 and 30 Milnthorpe Road is a house that has been subdivided, dating from the 17th century with later additions and alterations. It features coursed rubble on a vermiculated plinth and has a battered design. Number 28 is wet-dashed, and both houses have a moulded cast-iron gutter supported by dentils. The roofs are graduated slate with rendered chimneys; number 28 has a dormer, while number 30 has two skylights and retains its original stair wing along with a 19th-century outshut at the rear. The building is two storeys with an attic.

Number 28 consists of two bays. On the left, there is a passage to the rear with a 20th-century part-glazed door on the north side, and a small sash window to the right. The first floor has a sash window and a dormer, along with a narrow window on the first floor of the north return. Number 30 has four bays and features stone steps leading up to a recessed 20th-century plank door, with a sash window to the right and two to the left. There is a blocked fire window on the first floor to the left, with a lintel from a blocked two-light window visible between the two 19th-century sashes, and two more blocked windows under the eaves. An original diamond-leaded casement window survives in the stair wing.

The interior of number 30 retains plank and muntin partitions, chamfered beams, and flagged floors, along with a spice cupboard in the ground floor front room (south) that is initialled and dated T & E W 1687. The building is included partly for its group value.
