Description
The Former Romney House Hotel is a house that dates from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble, rendered at the front, and features rusticated corner pilasters on a plinth, along with a dentilled eaves cornice. The building has a graduated slate roof with stone end chimneys. It stands three storeys tall and has three bays. The entrance includes a part-glazed door with a rectangular fanlight, set in a surround with a cornice supported by tapered pilasters. There is a narrow sash window to the right and two sash windows to the left, with three sash windows on each floor above. A sign hangs from a wrought-iron bracket that projects above the door. Between the ground and first floors, there is a late 19th-century painted, circular, cast-iron plaque that reads: "HERE LIVED FOR A TIME AND DIED GEORGE ROMNEY PORTRAIT PAINTER BORN AT DALTON IN FURNESS 1734 DIED 1802."
