Description
The Kendal War Memorial, located in the grounds of the former K Shoes factory known as Netherfield Works near Nether Bridge, is made of Westmorland Green Slate. It stands on a stone-paved area with a curved stone wall as a backdrop.
The memorial features a Celtic-style wheel-head cross, with the front face adorned with carved Scandinavian interlace designs surrounding a central boss at the cross-head. This cross is mounted on a rectangular tapered shaft, which also has interlace designs in panels. One panel includes a relief inscription that reads: "IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF NETHERFIELD WORKS WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 TO 1918 AND IN UNDYING REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE HERE NAMED WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY" followed by the names of the individuals.
Above the shaft is a two-tiered plinth that displays the names of those who served, also carved in relief. An additional inscription added later states: "HERE ALSO ARE ADDED THE NAMES OF ALL FROM HERE AND ELSEWHERE WHO SERVING GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF 1939 – 1945," followed by more names.
The plinth is set on a two-stepped base.
