Description
The East Howle and Crossings War Memorial is located on the north side of a small garden situated between Ferryhill Town Hall and the Market Place. To the south, there are the Ferryhill War Memorial and the Walton Memorial, both of which are also listed as Grade II. This memorial features a granite Celtic cross that stands approximately 3 meters tall. The front face of the wheel-head is decorated with intricate interlace patterns carved in low relief. The front face of the cross shaft has a raised border that outlines two blind panels. The shaft is supported by a tapering plinth with a plain, square base, which rests on a single step made of a different stone.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF EAST HOWLE AND CROSSINGS, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914 – 1918." Below this, on the front face of the base, it states: "PASS NOT THIS STONE IN SORROW BUT IN PRIDE AND MAY YOU LIVE AS NOBLY AS THEY DIED." The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the sides of the plinth, while the names from the Second World War are listed on the rear face.
