Description
The gate piers at the entrance to the Recreation Ground were built around 1840, likely designed by I. Bonomi for R.J. Eden of Windlestone Hall, originally serving as an entrance to a mausoleum. They were relocated in 1972 as a gift from the Eden family. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the two square-plan piers stand approximately 3.5 meters high. Each pier features a chamfered plinth beneath channelled rustication, with an impost string leading to a central round-headed open arch. Above this arch is a triglyph frieze and a modillioned cornice, topped with a swept coping and a ball finial. The inner pilaster jambs are scroll-topped.
