Description

North Lodge to Windlestone Hall is an entrance lodge built in 1848 by Stephen Hunt, likely a mason, for William Eden, as indicated on the front and rear door lintels. The lodge is constructed of sandstone ashlar with channelled rustication and features a Welsh slate roof with a rendered chimney. It is designed in a classical style and is a single storey with one wide bay facing the drive.

The front has a pedimented tetrastyle unfluted Doric portico with a triglyph frieze. The stylobate is interrupted by central steps leading to a renewed glazed door, which is flanked by 6-pane casement windows set in plain reveals. Shallow pilasters are present, with those at the outer ends being rusticated. The returns of the lodge are blank beneath a wide cornice, and the rear is similar to the front.

The front lintel is inscribed with "GVLIELMVSEDENBSKPOSVIT," while the rear reads "STEPHANVSHVNTFECITADMDCCCXLVIII." There is a central ridge chimney. The left return has been altered by an extension that has since been removed and is in the process of being restored. The lodge was empty at the time of the survey.
