Description
The gateway and wall attached south of Manor House is a boundary feature likely dating from the 17th century, with some restoration in the late 20th century. The wall is made of thinly-rendered rubble and has a renewed brick coping. The gateway is constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings and coping.
The wall stands approximately 1.7 meters high and runs along the southern boundary of the Manor House garden, extending about 10 meters on either side of the gateway. The gateway itself is about 2 meters high, featuring a flat stone lintel above a boarded door that has a ledge and battens. It is topped with a gable that has moulded flat coping and three ball finials.
In the gable peak, there is a renewed inscription that reads 'SIC SITI LIETANTUR LARES (sic)/How happily seated those lares are/Who feed on Prospect and Fresh Air/Dine moderately every Day/ And Work their Suppertime away', accompanied by a low-relief scallop shell above it. Below this, there is a sundial that has been reset upside down, which bears the inscription 'Ad hoc memento...'.
