Description

This is a terrace of 36 houses built in the early 19th century in Ulverston. The terrace was constructed after the opening of the Ulverston Canal in 1796. The buildings are constructed of rubble, with a roughcast finish to the front, painted stone dressings, rendered brick chimney stacks, and slate roofs, some of which have been replaced with artificial slates.

The terrace follows a long, convex curve along the road from Canal Head to the town centre, rising from east to west so that each house steps up to meet its neighbour. Numbers 2 to 68 form a continuous terrace, with numbers 70 and 72 located beyond a back lane entrance and adjoining number 1 Canal Street (which is not included in the listing).

Each house is three storeys high and one window bay wide, with a doorway to the left. Original window openings survive in most of the houses, although numbers 12 and 52 have been altered with larger windows, and number 30 has a timber canted bay window on the ground floor. The rear elevations feature exposed stone walls, long staircase windows, and windows with segmental heads.
