Description
This is a row of four cottages located on Cottage Row in Newby, with various construction dates. No. 1 is dated 1871, featuring the initials C. & R.D. on a shield above the door, although this may relate to later remodelling since the building appears on an 1838 tithe map. No. 2 is likely from the late 18th century or early 19th century. Nos. 3 and 4 are probably from the late 17th century and were originally two low storeys; their roofs were raised in the early to mid-19th century. The cottages are built of coursed squared rubble with quoins and have a graduated slate roof. They are two storeys high. Nos. 1, 2, and 4 are symmetrical and consist of three bays, each with a central door and a window on either side on both floors. No. 3 has two bays, with a door to the left and a window on the right for each floor. All openings have dressed stone surrounds; the windows in No. 2 are 20th-century casements, while the others feature sashes with glazing bars. There are brick chimneys in the middle and at the ends. This row of cottages is included for its group value.
